Horse Anti-Poaching Units
To provide quiet, mobile and effective anti-poaching patrols in difficult terrain while enhancing rhino protection through increased visibility and faster response times.

Mounted patrols that extend protection across rugged terrain
Dedicated mounted rangers patrol vast and rugged landscapes where poachers can exploit remote access points to carry out illegal hunting. With horses, these rangers can cover up to 30km a day, which is three times the distance they would on foot. This enables them to respond faster to incursions and greatly improves the chances of stopping poachers before a rhino becomes another statistic.
These units face constant challenges, including underfunding, extreme working conditions and the daily dangers posed by wildlife encounters. Project Rhino supports selected game reserves by helping to equip, train and maintain these vital horse-mounted patrol units.
Quiet, visible and highly effective reserve support
Horse units offer a unique advantage in anti-poaching work by combining mobility, presence and access in places where vehicles and foot patrols are limited.
Longer patrol range
Mounted rangers can cover up to 30km a day, greatly increasing patrol reach across large reserve areas.
Difficult terrain access
Horses allow patrol teams to move through rugged landscapes and remote access points where poachers often exploit weak spots.
Faster response times
Greater mobility means rangers can react more quickly to incursions and suspicious activity before major damage is done.
Quiet patrol presence
Mounted patrols move more quietly than vehicles, helping rangers monitor reserves while maintaining a strong deterrent presence.
Frontline reserve support
Project Rhino helps selected reserves equip, train and maintain these specialised units so they remain effective in the field.
Daily resilience
Mounted rangers work in extreme conditions and face wildlife risks, making practical support essential for safety and performance.
